Capturing the magic that is rampant in every classroom
The ClassMovies project enables teachers and students to be the cinematographer of their own documentary which is then brought to life by professional editors. We empower teachers, principals and education organisations to produce mini documentaries about any aspect of school life.  A system of permission, consent and archiving allows for secure, administration free production and provides a flexible bank of documentaries that can be used in many ways.

Making a documentary may sound daunting. Teachers and students have found the opposite. Over 3,000 documentaries have been produced so far with 97% of teachers planning to film again. A survey of 1,000 teachers who produced their documentary found the experience to be affirming, enhanced their teaching and learning, and defined a new and powerful way to engage and communicate.

Magic's rampant in every classroom. Capturing the hidden magic is our speciality and we have invented and perfected a unique shooting technique to do just that. There are just three steps to making a ClassMovie documentary.

Classroom Documentaries
An Accidental Breakthrough

Feature article by Margaret Clark in 'Professional Educator' including interviews with leaders in education
Published by the Australian College of Educators, Volume 10, Issue 6. October 2011

Our foundation partners
Education organisations
What began as a small project with three schools in Sydney in 2006 has evolved into a major international programme across school systems through partnerships with education organisations. The programme has application for school promotion, parent engagement, closing the gap, reconciliation, curriculum, support for new teachers, celebrating teaching excellence, parent body fundraising, social cohesion, and community linkages. The support and encouragement of our four foundation partners has made it possible for teachers everywhere to make this documentary about their class.

Film Schools
The quality of any movie is dependent on the editing. Through our unique partnerships with leading film schools, every class documentary is brought to life by a professional editor. Our initial partnerships with Sydney Film School and Metro Screen have provided significant employment opportunities for talented film school graduates.

Extending ClassMovies beyond the classroom
The benefits of each documentary extend far beyond the classroom. We would like to share with you how our education organisation partners, schools and teachers are using the ClassMovies programme to reach out and connect with the hearts and minds of their communities.

A system wide celebration
Our partnership with Catholic Education in Western Australia provides a ClassMovie for every Pre-Primary teacher. This gift for every new parent and their children is funded across the entire system - from Perth to the remote Kimberley - and validates their choice of school system. CEOWA also plan to use the movies for teacher recruitment, showcasing best practice and highlighting learning outcomes. Over 500 classroom documentaries have been produced since 2009.

A partnership message with every movie into every home
Our partnership with IAPS in the UK includes a personal message from the Chief Executive about the values and merits of attending an IAPS school. For parents, this top down message is nicely juxtaposed to the bottom up message about their child.

A powerful tool for parent engagement
Our partnership with Croydon Local Education Authority in the UK is based on the success of the movies as a parent engagement tool across a wide socio-economic range of schools. The partnership received government funding for one class at all 100 schools in the face of large cuts to UK education budgets.

A tool for reconciliation and closing the gap in Aboriginal schools
Our ClassMovies Foundation has recently concluded a pilot where teachers from remote Aboriginal schools around Australia have been making movies of their classroom. The benefits extend to effective parent and student engagement as well as the exchange of movies between Aboriginal and non Aboriginal schools.

A fundraising tool for disadvantaged schools
Our partnership with the Independent Primary Schools Heads of Australia provides important fundraising with every parent movie. Monies are used to support IPSHA’s Biennium fundraising for disadvantaged and Aboriginal school children.

A national approach to an individual class documentary
Following the success of our partnership with Catholic Education in WA, we recently conducted a pilot programme with 45 teachers from a diverse cross section of Catholic primary schools from all states and the ACT. The results of the pilot were stunning with 98% of teachers planning to film again.
